Biography

German freestyle swimmer Meike Freitag, daughter of Werner Freitag, was mainly a relay swimmer and won three Olympic medals in 1996, 2000 and 2008. She was a member of both the 1996 4x100 and the 4x200 metres squads that won bronze and silver respectively, although she only swam the heats. At Sydney in 2000, she also won bronze in the 4x200, again swimming the heats but not the final. At Beijing she finished a disappointing fifth and 12th in both relays.

Freitag won one gold and three relay silver medals at World Championships from 2001-07. At Europeans she added three more gold medals, and one silver and one bronze, all in freestyle relays. Domestically, Freitag won three national titles with IM club relay teams, but never won an individual title. Freitag was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. She studied sports science and graduated in sports economics in 2006 at the University of Mainz. She was later employed by the Hessian Ministry of Internal Affairs and Sports.
