Biography

Angela Steinbach, sister of swimmer Klaus Steinbach, and aunt of his daughter, and handball player, Laura, was a freestyle swimmer who competed at the 1972 München Summer Games. She was eliminated in the heats in both the 100 and 200 m, but won the bronze medal with the West German 4x100 freestyle relay squad. Steinbach also won the bronze medal at the 1973 Belgrade World Championships, again in the 4x100 m freestyle relay. In 1974, she won her only national title, the 100 m freestyle. Steinbach later married the 1977 European Champion Jürgen Könneker. Both their sons, Axel and Robert, also became competitive swimmers.
