Biography

Werner Zandt was the son of well-known post World War I German sprinter Hugo Zandt. Nevertheless, Werner initially spurned athletics and was an avid football (soccer) player. At the age of 15, he was recruited to the Flak. In 1944, he won the Sprinter Flak championship in 10.9 seconds over 100 metres. In an air raid on Stuttgart, Zandt was severely wounded.

After World War II Zandt returned to football, but in 1948 went back to athletics. He participated at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics but did not reach any final, running in the 100, 200, and the sprint relay. In 1950 he was West German champion in the 100 and 200, in 1952 again in both sprints, and also winning with the sprint relay. By profession, Zandt was a process engraver.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.5 (1948); 200 – 21.4 (1951).
