Biography

Jens Weißflog’s international career spanned 12 years, remarkably long for a ski jumper. His first season in 1984 was exceptional, winning the Four Hills Tournament, the Overall World Cup, and gold and silver at the Sarajevo Olympics. Nicknamed “Floh” (flea) because of his low bodyweight, he again took the Overall World Cup in 1985, adding the normal hill world title in Seefeld.

He remained a consistent top competitor for years, totalling 33 World Cup wins, a host of World Championship silver and bronze medals, as well as the 1989 world title in the normal hill. His greatest performance came at Lillehammer, when he won the large hill event, both individually and with the German team. He also won five German national titles.

He said goodbye to the sport with a fourth victory in the Four Hills Tournament. Later, Weißflog worked as a ski jumping analyst for German television and owned a hotel. He was also active as a regional politician with the right-winged party CDU.
