The 1996 tennis program was the same as in 1988 and 1992, with four events, with men’s and women’s singles and doubles. The competition was held on hardcourts at the Stone Mountain Tennis Center, at Stone Mountain Park, in Stone Mountain, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. The Tennis Center was built specifically for the 1996 Olympics, but was little used after the Olympics, and fell into disrepair and was closed in 2007.
The United States and Spain both won three medals in 1996 Olympic tennis, but all three of the American medals were gold, missing out only in men’s doubles, won by the Australian Woodies – Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde. Interestingly, both the men’s and women’s singles champions were the children of former Olympians in other sports. Andre Agassi’s father, Emanoul “Mike” Aghasi, had boxed for Iran at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics; while Lindsay Davenport’s father, Wink Davenport, had played volleyball for the United States at the 1968 Olympics.
