Fencing at the 1928 Summer Olympics

The 1928 Olympic fencing program was the six men’s events of team and individual competition in foil, épée, and sabre and an individual foil event for women. That program had been established in 1924 with the introduction of women’s foil individual and would remain Olympic standard through 1956. It would not be until the following year, 1929, that these four individual events became the standard for the World Championships and it wasn’t until 1930 that all three men’s team events were added to the World Championships. A women’s foil team event was added in 1932 to the World Championships but would not be added to the Olympic program until 1960.

All of the fencing events took place at the Schermzaal in Amsterdam, a fencing hall specially constructed for the 1928 Olympics right next to the main stadium. France, Hungary and Italy split the men’s gold medals, with each winning two, with both France and Italy winning five total medals.
