FormatElimination by bad points. Win by fall = 0 points; win by decision = 1 point; loss by 2-1 decision = 3 points; loss by 3-0 decision = 3 points; loss by fall = 3 points. Three judges gave decisions, thus all decisions were either 2-1 or 3-0. Five bad points eliminated a wrestler.

Hungary’s Imre Polyák was favored, having won the 1955 World Championship, and a silver medal in this class at Helsinki. He made the final along with Finland’s Raino Mäkinen and Soviet Georgian Roman Dzeneladze, but he lost his first match in the final to Mäkinen. Polyák then defeated Dzeneladze which gave the gold medal to the Finn. All three finalists had four bad points in the final, and a 1-1 record, but the tiebreaker was total bad points, which placed Mäkinen first, Polyák second and Dzeneladze third.

Polyák would compete in 1960 at Roma, where he would win his third consecutive silver medal in this class. In 1964 he finally broke through and won a gold medal, also as a featherweight, which made him only the second wrestler, after Finland’s Eino Leino, to win four Olympic wrestling medals. Mäkinen also competed at the 1952 and 1960 Olympics, but this was his only medal.
