The last few World Championships had been split among several riders, so nobody was a strong favorite in Sydney. The 1996 silver medalist, American Marty Nothstein, led the qualifying, followed by the 1999 World Champion, Laurent Gané (FRA); the 1997-98 World Champion, Florian Rousseau (FRA); and the two-time defending gold medalist, Jens Fiedler of Germany. These four made it to the semi-finals, where Nothstein got revenge on Fiedler for the 1996 Olympic final, defeating him in two straight races. In the other semi, Rousseau defeated Gané in straights. Nothstein won the final quite easily, winning all nine of his match races en route to the gold medal. The fifth-place finisher, Jan van Eijden (GER), won the World Championship shortly after the Olympics. Nothstein achieved revenge on Rousseau, who had also beaten him in the 1996 World Championships final. This was the first cycling gold for the United States since the 1984 Games.
