Although Australia and the United States fought out most relay events at the Olympics, Great Britain was the defending gold medalist, having won at Tokyo 2020. The USA had won the 4x2 relay 17 times, the most titles by a single nation for any event on the Olympic Programme.

Great Britain led the preliminary round, followed by the United States, both nations using basically B teams. France was the third qualifier, followed by Australia. Because of a tie for eighth place between Japan and Israel, nine nations would swim the final.

In the final, Great Britain sent out the exact same team that had won gold in the Tokyo final – James Guy, Tom Dean, Matt Richards, and Duncan Scott. It had never happened before that a nation defended an Olympic swimming relay gold with the precise same team, but that precedent fell in Paris as Britain won gold again.

Great Britain went into the lead on the strength of Guy’s opening leg, and they maintained it throughout, winning the gold medal by 1.35 seconds over the USA, as Britain was the only nation to break seven minutes. Unsurprisingly, Australia came in for the bronze medal.
