At the 2023 World Championships, former World Junior Champion Victor Lindgren had lived up to his youthful promise and scored a surprise World championship win at the young age of 20. Sheng Lihao of China was another of the young generation of air rifle specialists, having won a medal at the Tokyo Olympics at age 17.

Despite this, many people rated Italy’s only slightly older Danilo Sollazzo as the favorite for gold. Sheng, Lindgren and Solazzo lived up to expectations by qualifying well up the leaderboard. In a high-class final, Solazzo was reduced to finishing fifth, while Sheng and Lindgren moved to the final round of competition.

Lindgren finished the event better than his Chinese opponent, but the gap in scores that Sheng had created in the early stages was too much for the Swede to have closed.
