Defending champion Hal Connolly had broken the world record in 1958 and earlier in 1960. But the favorite was Soviet Vasily Rudenkov, the best thrower of 1959. Connolly did not perform well in Roma, finishing eighth but Rudenkov lived up to expectations, winning the gold medal. He led from the first round, and had three throws longer than silver medalist Gyula Zsivótzky (HUN).
