Yordanka Donkova had broken the world record four times within four weeks in 1986, and won the European Championships that year. But in 1987, she saw teammate Ginka Zagorcheva break her record and win the World Championships. In the first round at Seoul, Zagorcheva hit hurdles and did not finish, opening the way for Donkova. In the final, she was expected to be pushed by the GDR’s Cornelia Oschkenat, runner-up at the 1987 Worlds, and third at the 1986 Europeans. But Oschkenat had pulled a hamstring in the semi-final and finished last in the final, never a factor. Donkova won easily, setting Olympic records in both the semi-final and final.
