Jack Keane graduated from New York University in 1952 and later fenced for the New York Athletic Club. He started out as a foil fencer, making the finals of the Amateur Fencers League of America (AFLA) championships in 1958. In 1960-61 Keane won the Metropolitan title in the three-weapon event. By 1962 he had switched to sabre, and in 1967 won gold medals in individual and team sabre at the Pan American Games, adding a silver medal in team sabre at the 1971 Pan Ams. Keane won the national sabre championship in 1968. By career he was an advertising executive. He and his wife were involved in charitable work, as founding members of St. Bartholomew Parish, sponsoring priestly missionary work in Africa, contributing to Doctors Without Borders, and participating in Meals On Wheels. Keane remained involved in fencing as USA team captain for three Olympic Games (1976, 1980, 1984) and as a referee, earning the honor of USA Fencing Referee Emeritus in 1999.
