After decades of Hungarian superiority the USSR gradually established themselves as the major power in men’s sabre during the 1960s. In Mexico the Soviets were ruthless in defeating all opponents up to the final and then, with a little more difficulty, beat Italy 9-7 to retain the title they had won in Tokyo. The Hungarian tradition in the event lingered as they won the bronze medal.
