Des Thomson was a New Zealand cyclist who represented his country throughout the 1960s. In 1964 Thomson was selected to compete at the Tokyo Olympics, finishing 61st in the road race, and 18th in the team time trial with his compatriots. One year after the Games he won two stages and the overall classification of the Dulux Tour Six Day race in New Zealand. In 1966 Thomson won silver in the road race at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica. He returned to the Olympics for the 1968 Games in Mexico City, once again riding in the road race and team time trial. His older brother Richie also rode in the same cycling races at the 1968 Olympics.
