Biography

Following a short career as a fencer René Dybkær became a noted professor in Denmark, working for the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). After the end of the war Dybkær was selected as part of the Danish delegation for the 1948 London Olympics. Denmark missed out on a medal in the team épée when they finished fourth after losing their three bouts in the final round of the competition. Four years later Dybkær returned to the Olympics, competing in the individual and team épée events at the Helsinki Games.

After his sporting career Dybkær graduated from the University of København, where he studied laboratory medicine, medical microbiology, and clinical chemistry. He worked in several hospitals in the area and became the head of the department of clinical chemistry in Frederiksberg Hospital. During his career he introduced the use of SI units in clinical laboratories.

In 1973 Dybkær became the Vice-President of the IFCC, before serving as their President from 1979 until 1984. In 2004 he became a doctor of science in medicine at the University of København. He was 93-years-old when he died in April 2019.
