Csaba Köves

His father, Mihály Köves, was the head coach in Szolnok and he instilled in his sons a love of fencing, who began fencing in the Szolnok MÁV-MTE sports club in 1977. Like most children, Csaba started with the foil, but soon switched to sabre, which really impressed him. In 1985 Köves transferred to Újpesti Dózsa to further develop himself. From there, his path led to BSE in 1997.

Between 1992 and 1995 Köves won the Hungarian individual championship four times in a row. He also had four championship successes in the team event, and was a member of the national team from 1989. He finished fourth at the World Championships both individually and in the team that same year. In 1990 he won silver and in 1991 he won gold at the World Championships in the team.

At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Köves finished 11th individually and second in the team event. A year later he was again world champion in the team and a silver medallist at the European Championships. In 1994 he won a silver medal in the team event at the World Championships, followed by a bronze in 1995. In 1996 he finished 18th individually in Atlanta and second again in the team event. Köves won another bronze medal in the team at the 1997 World Championships. Three years later he also competed at the Sydney Games, finishing 11th individually and fifth in the team.

While still active Köves graduated from the University of Physical Education but never worked as a coach or sports manager. Since retiring from fencing, he was involved in commerce. His wife, Gabriella Lantos, was also an Olympic fencer.
