Biography

A graduate of the Military Institute of Physical Culture, Ukrainian-born Yulen Uralov was already well-known as a fencer in the Soviet Union by the 1950s. He won a bronze medal at the national championships in the individual foil in 1949, silver in 1955, and gold in 1952 and 1953. He was therefore selected to represent the Soviet Union at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals and round one of the individual and team foil events respectively, in the latter alongside Ivan Komarov, German Bokun, and Mark Midler. He later worked as a coach in Ukraine and, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, moved to Israel.
