Biography

Kiyoko Ono competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal with the Japanese team, when she placed ninth individually in the all-around. Kiyoko was married to Japanese gymnastic legend Takashi Ono and they later established a private sports club together.

Kiyoko Ono went into politics, winning election to the Japanese House of Councillors in 1986, in which she served three terms. In 2003 she became the first woman to head the National Public Safety Commission. After retiring from politics, she served as a director of the Japan Sport Council. In 2016, she received the Olympic Order in silver from the IOC in recognition of her contribution to the Olympic movement.
