Biography

Nelson Oñate was a Cuban sports shooter and coach. Oñate’s first international success came at the 1967 Pan American Games, where he won the silver medal as part of the 50 metres free pistol team. The following year Oñate competed in the 50 metres free pistol at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he finished in seventh place.

Oñate won multiple medals at international competitions, including a gold at the 1975 Pan American Games, and three golds at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Oñate later moved to Miami where he set up a sports shooting club with his brother. Whilst in the United States Oñate worked as a butcher.
