Biography

Lieutenant Johan Hübner von Holst from Stockholm competed in three Olympics, winning a total of six medals in both pistol and rifle events. He medaled in every Games he participated, but was most successful in 1912 when he won two team gold medals and two individual medals – silver in small-bore rifle, disappearing target, and bronze in the dueling pistol. Shortly before the outbreak of World War I he also competed in the Baltic Games, held at the same time as the 1914 Baltic Exhibition in Malmö, where he won five gold medals and one bronze medal.

Son of Lord Chamberlain Johan Gustaf von Holst, Johan Hübner von Holst was a career military man. After taking his officer’s exams in 1904, he served as a lieutenant and from 1917 as a captain with Svea Life Guards. From 1906-07, von Holst was the instructor at the Gymnastics Central Institute (now the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences), while from 1914-15 he was regimental adjutant of Svea Life Guards and from 1915-27 was the head of 6. Company of Svea Life Guards. Von Holst retired from the force in 1928.
