Biography

Ivan Stedman was seriously wounded while serving in Belgium in World War I. After the end of the war, he competed in the 1919 Inter-Allied Games in Paris. At Antwerpen, Stedman took part in freestyle and breaststroke events. Four years later, he raced the same strokes, but with the relay team, which eventually won a silver medal, although Stedman only appeared in the early rounds. After World War II he took up long-distance swimming and won a long-distance event on the Yarra River as late as in 1952. After school Stedman worked for a tobacco merchant from 1927-31, and then owned a company processing dairy products. He later held various jobs in sales and as an office manager. Stedman was married to an opera singer.
