Biography

East German swimmer Ulrike Tauber won the gold medal in the 400 individual medley at the 1976 Montréal Games. She also earned a silver medal in the 200 metres butterfly. Four years later at Moskva she came in fifth in the 400 individual medley. In 1974 and 1977, she won four more gold medals and two silvers at the Europeans. She also won a gold, two silvers, and a bronze at the Worlds in 1975 and 1978. Tauber won 10 East German national titles, and set nine world records in the individual medleys, six at 200 metres, and four at 400 metres.

In 1974 and 1977, she was named World Swimmer of the Year. Both awards were stripped in 2013, after it became known, that Tauber was involved in the systematic doping processes in the former GDR, and she later admitted to having known about it. In 1988 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. By profession, she became an orthopaedic surgeon, and during the 1990s, she supervised the German female national water polo team.
