Biography

Cinzia Savi Scarponi was an Italian butterfly swimmer who is considered one of the greatest ever Italian swimmers. Growing up in Lazio Nuoto, she began with freestyle but switched to the butterfly and IM. In a 7-year career, she collected 23 Italian summer titles and 19 spring titles, as well as setting 24 Italian records at various distances in every stroke except breaststroke.

In 1982 she decided to retire, but Italy’s swimming technical director Costantino Dennerlein convinced her to return for the 1983 European Championships in Roma, where she won bronze in the 100 butterfly and placed fourth in the 200 fly and the 400 IM. She left swimming before the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to devote herself to her other great passion, the theatre, and to work as a television anchorwoman for the RAI International channel.
