Biography

Dutch swimmer and diver Truus Klapwijk represented the Rotterdamsche Dames-Zwemclub in Rotterdam and competed for the Netherlands at three consecutive Olympics. Women’s water polo made its Olympic début at the 1920 Antwerpen Games with two teams from the Hollandsche Dames Zwemclub (Dutch Ladies’ Swimming Club) playing in an exhibition match. Klapwijk was one of the 14 competitors who took part in the match, with the game finishing in a 2–2 tie, with women not competing in the sport again until the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Four years later Klapwijk took part in swimming and diving at the 1924 Paris Olympics, competing in the springboard, 400 metres freestyle, and the 4 × 100 metres freestyle relay. Her best performance came in the latter, with the Dutch team finishing sixth. Her third and final Olympic appearance came at the 1928 Amsterdam Games, taking part in the springboard and platform diving. Outside of the Olympics, Klapwijk won silver at the 1927 European Championships 4×100 metres freestyle relay, along with Zus Braun, Rie Vierdag, and Willy den Turk.
