Biography

Russian diver Galina Alekseyeva represented Dynamo Moskva in addition to competing internationally for the Soviet Union. Alekseyeva won her first medal at the USSR championships in 1961 when she finished third in the 3 metre springboard. She won another bronze in the event the following year before winning silver in the 10 metre platform in 1963. In 1964 she became the USSR champion for the first time in the 10 metre platform. This earned her a place on the Soviet team for the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo where she won the bronze medal. She continued her good form in the event by becoming the champion of the USSR in 1965 and 1966, before winning bronze in 1967. Towards the end of her career Alekseyeva won bronze in the 3 metre springboard at the 1970 USSR championships before retiring from the sport the following year. She later worked as a swimming coach and was bestowed with the Honoured Master of Sports in 2003. Alekseyeva was married to Gennady Galkin who also competed in diving for the Soviet Union at the Olympics.
