José López

After the war Cuban athlete José López had a brief career as an amateur freestyle wrestler, which saw him become the captain of the national team. López won multiple tournaments in his native Cuba to earn himself a place on the Olympic team for the 1948 Games in London. As a featherweight he competed in the freestyle event at the Games, first losing to Adolf Müller (SUI), before defeating Kim Geuk-Hwan (KOR). He was then eliminated in the next round of the competition after suffering a loss to Paavo Hietala (FIN).

López had success at the Central American and Caribbean Games, first winning gold in the lightweight class in 1950, before winning another gold four years later, this time as a welterweight. He also won bronze as a welterweight at the 1951 Summer Pan American Games in Buenos Aires. In 1958 López moved to the United States, where he ran his own upholstery business with him living and working in Miami for the rest of his life.
