Biography

Although Pirkko Määttä was on the Finnish national team for over ten years, she was never considered as the top Finnish female skier. During her career Määttä skied in four Winter Olympics and won two relay bronzes in 1984 and 1988. Her best individual place at the Olympics was seventh in the 10 km at the 1988 Olympics. Määttä was more successful at the World Championships, competing in every World Championships between 1987 and 1995. The high point of her career was at the 1989 World Championships, where she won a gold in the relay, silver in the 10 km and bronze in the 15 km. By profession Määttä has been a recreation director.
