Biography

Georgeta Damian-Andrunache is one of only three rowers to have won five Olympic gold medals, together with Steven Redgrave and Elisabeta Oleniuc-Lipă. Remarkably, Damian-Andrunache won her titles in just three Olympics, in 2000, 2004 and 2008. In each of these Games, she won the coxless pairs event, making her one of ten Olympic rowers to win the same event three times in a row. At the Sydney and Athens Games, she was part of the victorious Romanian eights crew, which also featured Oleniuc-Lipă. In 2008, Damian-Andrunache, who is married to Olympic rower Valeriu Andrunache, added a bronze medal in the eights event. Besides her five Olympic titles, she has also won five World titles between 1997 and 2003, three in the eights and two in the coxless pairs.
