Description

Prior to 1988, a few Aruban athletes competed with the Netherlands Antilles team, until the nation gained autonomous status from the other islands on 1 January 1986. In anticipation of this development, Aruba’s National Olympic Committee was formed on 21 August 1985. The recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) followed on 17 October 1986, at the IOC session in Lausanne.

Aruba competed in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1988 in Seoul, and has competed in all Olympic Games since then, but has not yet competed at the Olympic Winter Games. Through 2022, it has been represented by 33 athletes since 1988, the most being eight in its début participation.

Aruba has not yet won a medal. In 2016, Jayme Mata won one match in half-lightweight judo to finish equal ninth of 34 in his class, the top finish to date from this small island nation.
