Description

The National Olympic Committee of Vietnam was formed on 25 November 1951 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the following year. Formally the Republic of Vietnam, South Vietnam first competed at the 1952 Olympics, and, despite the ongoing war with North Vietnam, did not fail to attend until the nation was merged with North Vietnam in 1975.

South Vietnam never competed at the Olympic Winter Games and its athletes, notably with large contingents of cyclists, failed to achieve impressive results. Since 1980, athletes from the former South Vietnam have competed for the unified Vietnamese team.
