Weightlifting at the 1992 Summer Olympics

Dates 26 July – 4 August 1992
Medal Events 10

The 1992 Olympic weightlifting program was the same as it had been since 1980, with 10 classes for men only, and no change in the weight divisions. However, at Atlanta in 1996 the weight classes would change as the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) tried to “cleanse” the world record lists by creating new weight categories with new records, in an attempt to eliminate doping related marks. This failed miserably as doping continued to occur and the IWF would actually make two further attempts at “cleansing” the record lists in the coming years.

The 1992 weightlifting events were held at the Pabellón de la España Industrial, a building constructed specifically for the Barcelona Olympics, and completed in 1991. Eleven nations won medals in Barcelona, but the former Soviet Union, now competing as the Unified Team, led the lists with nine medals and five golds. Bulgaria and China won four medals each, while Germany and Poland each won three medals. No nation other than the Unified Team won more than one event.
