Judo at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Dates 27 July – 3 August 2024
Medal Events 15
Venues Grand Palais Éphémère, Paris, France

The 2024 judo programme at the Paris Olympics was precisely the same as in 2020, with seven events for both men and women, and a mixed team event which had been added in 2020. The competitions were held at the Grand Palais Éphémère, in Paris.

As always, Japan was expected to dominate the medal standings in judo at Paris. They led the all-time judo medal table for both medals and gold medals at the Olympic Games, and at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics they became the first nation to collect more than 10 judo medals at a single Olympic Games, with 12 at both Games. Going into Paris, Japan had won 48 of the 152 Olympic judo gold medals, three times as many as the next best nation, France, with 16.

Japan did win the most judo events in Paris, with three, but host nation France won the most medals, with 10, followed by Japan, with 8. France and Azerbaijan also won two gold medals, as 26 nations won judo medals at Paris 2024.

By class, Japan and Azerbaijan won two men’s events, with Japan leading the medal table with five for their men. France led the women’s medal table, also with five, but strangely all bronze medals. The seven women’s events were divided up among seven different nations. Thirteen nations won medals in the men’s events while 19 nations made the podium in the women’s tournament.

Teddy Riner won the heavyweight class gold medal and helped France win the mixed team event, giving him five gold medals, including three in the heavyweight class, seven Olympic medals, and medals at the last five Olympic Games, all Olympic bests for the sport of judo, although among the women, Japan’s Ryoko Tamura-Tani also had won medals at five Olympics.
