Croquet was contested at the Olympic Games only once, at Paris 1900, with three open events, although a variant of the sport, “roque”, was contested as a full-medal sport at St. Louis 1904. Although the sport is not currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), nor is it a member of the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), its international governing body is the World Croquet Federation (WCF).
The WCF was founded on 15 July 1989, in London, Great Britain, followed by the first WCF Association Croquet World Championship for men. The début of the WCF Women’s Association Croquet World Championship would only come in 2012, in Melbourne, Australia. Since its formation, the WCF has evolved and grown and extended into other variants of the game, today also holding World Championships in the discipline of golf croquet, the inaugural edition being staged in 1996, in Milano, Italy.
As of January 2026, there are currently 29 members of the WCF across five continents (13 Full members, six Associate members, and the remainder are Recognized Croquet Organizations). Spain’s José Álvarez-Sala is the federation current president since January 2024.
