At the 1999 World Championships, Nigerian-born Canadian Daniel Igali had defeated American Lincoln McIlravy in the final. Both were in Sydney and expected to contend for the gold medal. They made the knockout phase but were unfortunately drawn against each other in the semi-final, with Igali winning a 6-3 decision in overtime. The other semi matched Russian Arsen Gitinov against Belarussian Sergey Demchenko, neither of whom had major international palmares. Gitinov won that match to face Igali in the final, but he was no match for the Canadian, as Igali won the gold medal, 7-4. McIlravy won the bronze medal, defeating Demchenko 3-1, which gave him his third consecutive major international medal, after World silver in 1998 and bronze in 1999.
