This was expected to be a battle between Kenyan Beatrice Chepkoech, the world record holder and 2019 World Champion; Bahraini Winfred Yavi, the 2023 World Champion and the second fastest performed of all-time; and Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, the defending gold medalist. Chepkoech and Chemutai pushed the early pace, passing the first kilometre in 2:55.1, hoping to burn off the finishing speed of Yavi. It would not work.

The second kilometre was slower, but all the main combatants remained in the lead group. Yavi never led until the final lap, when she took over at the water jump, and her finishing speed was unmatched as she took gold in an Olympic record 8:52.76. Chemutai won the silver medal as Chepkoech dropped off the pace on the final lap and would place fifth. Bronze went to Kenyan Faith Cherotich, who had always been with the leaders, but could not match Yavi or Chemutai on the home straight.

Finishing fourth was home crowd favorite Alice Finot of France, who set a European record of 8:58.67. She had bigger plans, however, and after the finish dropped to a knee and asked her boyfriend, Spanish triathlete Bruno Martínez Bargiela, to marry her, giving him an Olympic pin – he said yes.
