France’s Renaud Lavillenie was the defending gold medallist and had been the premier vaulter over the last few years. He came to Rio as the favorite but left in tears. After 5.85 only three vaulters remained, Lavillenie, American Sam Kendricks, and Brazil’s Thiago Braz. Kendricks went out at 5.93, taking bronze. Lavillenie was clear through 5.98 and seemed in control, with Braz clearing 5.93 and then passing 5.98. At 6.03 Braz cleared on his second attempt, as Lavillenie missed twice. Needing a better height for the gold medal, as he trailed on misses, Lavillenie took his final attempt at 6.08 but it was not much of an effort. Braz had won gold in a huge upset, as Lavillenie took silver, with the Brazilian exulting in the victory.

The Brazilian crowd had been biased in their support of Braz, but they also booed and jeered Lavillenie whenever he appeared on the runway. The Frenchman was moved to tears, and Braz had to apologize when, the next day on the podium, the Brazilian crowd again booed Lavillenie. He was comforted under the stands by Braz and Ukrainian vault legend Sergey Bubka, but Lavillenie would have no good memories from the 2016 Olympics.
