The favorite was Soviet archer Emma Gapchenko, the 1971 World Champion. American Doreen Wilber was considered a contender, having placed second at the 1969 and 1971 World Championships. However, the leader after the first FITA round was Poland’s Irena Szydłowska, who had won medals at the 1967 and 1971 World Championships, but had never won a major international title. Gapchenko was second and Wilber fourth after the first round. But Wilber had the best second FITA round, scoring 1,226 to set an overall Double FITA Round world record of 2,424 and win the gold medal, with Szydłowska second and Gapchenko third.
