Italy had always been strong in shotgun shooting and 1980 was no exception. After winning gold medals in 1956, 1964, and 1972, Luciano Giovannetti continued the Italian tradition of winning the trap gold medal at every other Olympic Games. His 198 gave him a two-point margin over three shooters – Rustam Yambulatov (URS), Jörg Damme (GDR), and Josef Hojny of Czechoslovakia. Hojny went out in the first shoot-off and did not medal, while Yambulatov won silver with a 25 possible in the second shoot-off. Giovannetti would return in 1984 to defend his gold medal.
