Canada was the favorite in both the men’s and women’s events, but the national squad led by Ed Lukowich had clear challenges from both Norway’s Eigil Ramsfjell, a long-time international skip who would go on to win the World Championship later that year, and Britain/Scotland’s David Smith, who had finished second to Lukowich two years prior at the World Championships.

At the end of Round Robin play, Canada and a surprisingly effective Swiss lineup led by Hansjürg Lips topped the standings while Smith’s team failed to win to a single match, causing an uproar in his home nation. Norway, which had struggled somewhat during the Round Robin, came back with renewed vigor during the tie-breaking matches and defeated Sweden and the United States to earn a spot in the playoffs. Once there, they were met with resistance from the Canadian squad, but won the match 8-5 and went on to crush Switzerland in the final 10-2, leaving the home nation to settle for bronze.
