The Olympic canoeing program was standardized in 1992, with no change in the men’s and women’s programs from 1992-2008. There were nine men’s flatwater events (five kayak, four Canadian canoe) and three women’s flatwater kayak events, all considered canoe sprint events.
The top nations in sprint canoeing at Athina were Germany and Hungary, which was fairly standard for this discipline. Germany won seven medals and four gold medals, while Hungary took six medals and three gold medals.
The 2004 flatwater events were held at the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre. This was constructed in Schinias National Park, just north of the town of Marathon, and was the northernmost venue of the 2004 Olympic Games, save for some of the football matches. The centre was built specifically for the 2004 Olympics but was not actually completed until early in 2004.
