Carl Westergen was the defending Olympic champion in the middleweight class but had moved up in weight by Paris. He was expected to win with his main challenger expected to be his teammate, Rudolf Svensson, who had been runner-up in this class at the 1921 and 1922 World Championships. Unfortunately they were drawn against each other in the first round, with Westergren winning by fall in 5:40. After that match they both continued to win, and met again in the final round with the gold medal on the line, Westergren again winning, this time by decision. A few days later, Svensson would also win the silver medal in light-heavyweight freestyle. Finland’s Onni Pellinen won bronze, the first of three Olympic medals in this event, as he repeated as the bronze medalist at Amsterdam in 1928, and moved up to a silver medal in Los Angeles in 1932.
