LocationPista de Hielo Insurgentes, Ciudad de México

FormatScoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

In 1967 Turkey’s Ahmet Ayık won both the European and World Championships, defeating Soviet Georgian Shota Lomidze, the 1966 European Champion, in the World finals. They advanced to the final round in Mexico City, along with Hungarian József Csatári. Csatári was quickly eliminated when he was thrown by Ayık late in their match, after he had already lost by decision to Lomidze. Ayık and Lomidze again met for the gold medal, and their match ended in a draw, but Ayık won the gold by virtue of fewer bad points earlier in the tournament.

Ayık wrestled for two more years, winning the 1970 European Championship, his eighth major international title. Lomidze moved up in weight after the Mexico City Olympics, winning World titles in 1969 and 1971 and a European title in 1969, all as a heavyweight. Czatári would also move up to heavyweight and wrestled through 1974. A steady performer, he would finish in the top six places 15 times at the Olympics, Worlds, and Europeans, winning three silvers and three bronze medals, but he never won a major international.
