Daniel Morelon (FRA) had been the best sprinter since the mid-60s, winning the 1968 and 1972 gold medals, and seven World Championships. He made it to the finals unbeaten, where he faced the 1974 World Champion, Czechoslovakia’s Anton Tkáč. Tkáč won the first race easily with the fastest sprint time of the competition, 10.78, but Morelon came back to win the second race. In the decider, Tkáč jumped early and opened a five-length lead that Morelon could not overcome. The bronze medal race was won by the GDR’s Hans-Jürgen Geschke, who began a long line of great East German sprinters. He would win the 1977 World Championship while Tkáč would come back in 1978 to win a second world title. Morelon effectively retired after 1976, although he raced briefly in 1977 and won the Grand Prix de Paris. He ended his Olympic career with five medals – four in the sprint and gold in the 1968 tandem. One new feature in 1976 was that the losing quarter-finalists competed in a four-up race to determine the fifth thru eighth placements.
