The women’s high hurdles were expected to be a battle between Puerto Rican Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, twice an NCAA Champion at the University of Kentucky, and American Keni Harrison, the world record holder and the silver medallist at the 2019 World Championships.
In the semi-finals Camacho-Quinn broke the Olympic record with her PR of 12.26. Harrison also qualified for the final, but was only second in the second semi behind Jamaican Britany Anderson. Joining them in the final was the winner of the first semi-final, Nigerian Tobi Amusan.
The final turned into the expected dual between Camacho-Quinn and Harrison. Camacho-Quinn pulled ahead by hurdle six, and held on, despite clipping hurdle nine, and stutter-stepping hurdle 10, and won the gold medal, her 12.35 leading Harrison by 0.15 seconds. Behind them, Jamaica’s Meghan Tapper won bronze just ahead of Amusan.
For Puerto Rico, this was only their second Olympic gold medal in any sport, after Monica Puig won the women’s tennis singles in 2016. It was also the island’s second medal in athletics following a bronze medal in the 2012 men’s 400 hurdles by Javier Culson.
