| Format | Each team consisted of three players. In each team match, at most 5 matches were played, two singles, one double, and (if necessary) two more singles. Winners of each pool in round one advanced to the single elimination tournament, runners-up in each pool played off for a place in the bronze medal match. | |
China won the gold and silver medal in the women’s team event. Well, that’s not actually possible because each nation could enter only one team. But China did win the gold medal, defeating a Singapore team in the final that consisted of three immigrants from China. This was the second Olympic medal ever for Singapore, 48 years after the weightlifting silver medal won by “Tiger” Tan. The Singapore players earned a bonus of about $500,000, missing out on the $1 million bonus for the gold. The bronze medal match was won by Korea, defeating Japan.
