Marita Koch (GDR) had set three world records in 1978-79, but elected to compete only in the 400 in Moskva. The 1978 European Champion had been Lyudmila Kondratyeva (USSR) who had already won the 100 in Moskva, but withdrew from the 200 because of injuries she had sustained in that event. The top American was Evelyn Ashford, who had won the 1979 World Cup, but she was not present because of the American-led boycott. This left the favorite’s role to the defending champion Bärbel Wöckel. She came thru to defend her gold medal, winning from lane one.
