Kazakh Olga Rypakova led the qualifying round with a mark of 14.79. She was a co-favorite with Ukrainian Olha Saladuha, the 2011 World Champion, where Rypakova had taken silver. Rypakova had also won triple jump silver at Beijing 2008. The 2012 World Indoor champion and British home team favorite Yamilé Aldama, who formerly competed for Cuba until January 2004 and Sudan till August 2011, hit the qualification mark on her first attempt, despite a shoulder injury.
In the opening round of the final Rypakova took the lead with 14.54 ahead of Colombia’s Caterine Ibargüen at 14.45. Rypakova’s big mark came in round three when she leapt 14.98 which would bring her the gold medal. Ibargüen improved in that round with 14.67. After five rounds Saladuha stood fourth, behind Rypakova, Ibargüen, and her countrywoman Hanna Kniazieva. In the final round Saladuha jumped 14.79, moving into the silver medal position, only to see Ibargüen record 14.80 a few jumpers later and take that silver medal.
Ibargüen would win the 2013 and 2015 Worlds and come back at Rio 2016 to win gold in front of Yulimar Rojas who won the silver medal, with Rypakova adding a bronze medal to complete her set of medals in the event. Saladuha would compete at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics but never made another final round.
