Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou was the defending gold medalist and came to Paris as the favorite, having won the World Championships in 2023 and the European Championships in 2018, 2022, and 2024. Jamaica had a trio of potential medalists, as in 2023 Track & Field News had world ranked Wayne Pinnock, Tajay Gayle, and Carey McLeod, at #2, #3, and #4, respectively.

Tentoglou had a big opening jump in qualifying with 8.32 metres, which led the qualifiers easily, with Czechia’s Radek Juška in second at 8.15 and China’s Wang Jianan in third at 8.12. Pinnock and McLeod qualified for the final, finishing 7th and 11th, respectively, but Gayle missed out, finishing 19th.

Italy’s Mattia Furlani, a high jump / long jump combo jumper who had won both events at the 2022 European U-18 Championships, led the final in round one, jumping 8.34 metres, with Tentoglou in second at 8.27. Round two ultimately decided the podium as Tentoglou cleared 8.48 metres to defend his gold medal, and Pinnock moved into second with 8.36. Furlani’s 8.25 was his second best mark of the evening, and he would win bronze.

Tentoglou became only the second man to defend Olympic long jump gold, after Carl Lewis, who uniquely won four consecutive golds from 1984-96, although Meyer Prinstein (USA) also won gold in 1904 and 1906.
