Mihai Zafiu had the following podium finishes at the Flatwater World Championships: 1st 1974 K1 4×500 m (with Vasile Dîba, Atanasie Sciotnic, and the non-Olympian Ernst Pavel), 2nd 1970 K1 4×500 m (with Aurel Vernescu and the non-Olympians Eugen Botez and Ion Jacob), 2nd 1971 K1 4×500 m (with Dimitrie Ivanov, Aurel Vernescu, and the non-Olympian Eugen Botez), 2nd 1975 K1 4×500 m (with Vasile Dîba, Ion Dragulschi, and Nicuşor Eşanu), 2nd 1977 K4 500 m (with Ion Dragulschi, Vasile Simiocenco, and the non-Olympian Beniami Borbandi), 2nd 1978 K4 1000 m (with Ion Bîrlădeanu, Nicuşor Eşanu, and Alexandru Giura), 3rd 1973 K1 4×500 m (with Atanasie Sciotnic, Vasile Simiocenco, and Roman Vartolomeu).
